I'm sentimental, so I walk in the rain I've got some habits even I can't explain Could start for the corner, turn up in Spain But why try to change me now? I sit and daydream, I've got daydreams galore Cigarette ashes, there they go on the floor I go away weekends, leave my keys in the door But why try to change me now? Why can't I be more conventional? People talk, people stare, so I try But that's not for me, 'cause I can't see My kind of crazy world go passing me by So let people wonder, let them laugh, let them frown You know I'll love you 'til the moon's upside-down Don't you remember I was always your clown? So why try to change me now? Cy Coleman, Joe McCarthy

Please let me say from the start I don't pretend to be smart I just suggest what I think the best Having your interest at heart I only want what's the best thing for you And the best thing for you would be me I've been convinced after thinking it through That the best thing for you would be me Ev'ry day To myself I say Point the way What will it be I ask myself what's the best thing for you And myself and I seem to agree That the best thing for you would be me Irving Berlin

You were my adored one Then you became the bored one And I was like a toy that brought you joy one day A broken toy that you preferred to throw away If I expected love when first we kissed Blame it on my youth If only just for you I did exist Blame it on my youth I believed in everything Like a child of three You meant more than anything All the world to me. If you were on my mind all night and day Blame it on my youth If I forgot to eat and sleep and pray Blame it on my youth If I cried a little bit When first I learned the truth Don't blame it on my heart Blame it on my youth. Oscar Levant, Edward Heyman

Several people of my acquaintance Seem very concerned about you and me They're trying to be nice They're going out of their way They offer me advice There must be something in what they say My very good friend the milkman says That I've been losing too much sleep He doesn't like the hours I keep And he suggests that you should marry me My very good friend the mailman says That it would make his burden less If we both had the same address And he suggests that you should marry me. And there's a very friendly fellow who prints All the latest real estate news And every day he sends me blueprints Of cottages with country views My very good friends the neighbors say They've been watching little things I do And they believe that I love you So I suggest that you should marry me Johnny Burke, Harold Spina

There was a time when we'd be the last to leave Watching the sun come up while everyone fell asleep The music was always loud and I'd smoke and drink too much Until I'd fall in your arms and into your loving touch Now as the years roll by, time has reeled me in I've slowed down a notch or two from the way things were then And those old ways of mine, I've left them behind Those crazy days are through The only thing I still do like I used to do Is carry this torch for you Remember the days when we'd pack our bags and run Chasing some crazy dream into the morning sun Now as the twilight falls, I find I'm satisfied Watching the fire glow just as long as you're by my side Here in my heart it seems, time has passed me by But I love you as much today as the very first time And those old ways of mine, I've left them behind Those crazy days are through The only thing I still do like I used to do Is carry this torch for you I still want you the way I wanted you then If I could do it all over, I'd do it all over again And those old ways of mine, I've left them behind Those crazy days are through The only thing I still do like I used to do Is carry this torch for you Tim O'Brien, Patrick Alger

I've written you a song A beautiful routine (I hope you like it) My technique can't be wrong I learned it from the screen. (I hope you like it) I've studied all the rhymes that all the lovers sing Then just for you I wrote this little thing Blah, blah, blah, blah, moon Blah, blah, blah, above Blah, blah, blah, blah, croon Blah, blah, blah, blah, love. Tra la la la, tra la la la la, merry month of May Tra la la la, tra la la la la, 'neath the clouds of gray Blah, blah, blah, your hair Blah, blah, blah, your eyes Blah, blah, blah, blah, care, Blah, blah, blah, blah, skies Tra la la la, tra la la la la, cottage for two Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, darling, with you George and Ira Gershwin

Poor You 02:54
I'm sad for anybody walking about Who's missed all the thrills I've been through I'm sad for anybody who hasn't found out Just what your caresses can do And that's why I'm especially sad for you Poor you I'm sorry you're not me Because you'll never know What loving you can be Poor you You'll never know your charms You'll never feel your warmth You're never in your arms When it is you I'm kissing I pity you constantly You don't know what you're missing `Cause you're only kissing poor me Poor you You'll live your whole life through And yet you'll never know The thrill of loving you. E. Y. Harburg, Burton Lane

I make a date for golf, and you can bet your life it rains I try to give a party, and the guy upstairs complains I guess I'll go through life, just catching colds and missing trains Everything happens to me I never miss a thing, I've had the measles and the mumps And every time I play an ace, my partner always trumps Guess I'm just a fool who never looks before he jumps Everything happens to me At first my heart thought you could break this jinx for me That love would turn the trick to end despair But now I just can't fool this head that thinks for me I've mortgaged all my castles in the air I've known a lot of love, but there is something that I lack Each time that there's a break-up, I'm the one who gets the sack And when I give my heart away, I always get it back Everything happens to me I've telegraphed and phoned and sent an air mail special too Your answer was goodbye, there was even postage due I fell in love just once, and then it had to be with you Everything happens to me Tom Adair, Matt Dennis

Dreamer 02:40
Why are my eyes always filled with this vision of you Why do I dream silly dreams that I know won't come true I long to show you the stars Caught in the dark of the sea I long to speak of my love but you don't come to me So I go on thinking maybe some day you'll care I tell my sad little dreams to the soft evening air I am quite hopeless it seems Two things I know how to do One is to dream Two is loving you Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gene Lees
10.
When I fell for you, you were something I thought nothing could be better for me Than spending my nights holding you tight Just goes to show you how wrong I can be Now lately you've been staying out the whole night through Tell me what's a fool like you supposed to do Leaving you would leave me with nothing But nothing could be better than you Once upon a time we had something I thought nothing could be better than that But I'm getting wise to your little lies Honey, you can find yourself a new door mat Nothing could be better than shaking these blues Walking out is easy when there's nothing to lose Leaving you would leave me with nothing But nothing could be better than you Mike Dowling, Jan Dowling
11.
Oh it never fails, anytime I start To speak my mind I break her heart Oh it never fails Any time I feel my faith is strong This doubt appears and steers me wrong Oh it never fails This world is not the one we used to know and love Can't help wondering if it ever was Oh it never fails, in times like these I hold you and my soul's at ease Oh it never fails No, it never fails Ron Sexsmith
12.
If I've no will to go from home And have no urge the seas to roam And turn my back on a distant star And never burn to wander far It's not because of fear It's because my goal is clear There's a far land I'm told Where I'll find a field of gold But here I'll stay with you. And they say there's an isle deep with clover Where your heart wears a smile all day through But I know, well, they're wrong And I know where I belong Here I'll stay with you For that land is a sandy illusion It's the theme of a dream gone astray And the world others woo I can find loving you And so here I'll stay Kurt Weill, Alan Jay Lerner

about

Justin Hayford has been called "a superb talent" by the Chicago Tribune and a "hip piano-playing saloon singer who should be heard more often" by Rex Reed. On this, his fourth album, Justin and his jazz trio perform classic standards from some of the greatest songwriters in American history -- like Irving Berlin, Jimmy Van Heusen, Cy Coleman and George Gershwin. He also includes Tim O'Brien's endearing folk waltz "Like I Used to Do," Mike Dowling's clever western swing tune "Nothing Could Be Better," and Ron Sexsmith's poignant pop ballad "It Never Fails."

More importantly, Justin is letting you pay whatever you want for his new CD -- and all the proceeds will go directly to AIDS Legal Council of Chicago, an organization that provides free legal services to impoverished men, women and children with HIV. It may be hard to believe that people with HIV still face mistreatment, stigma and discrimination in this day and age, but AIDS Legal Council of Chicago must fight every day to make sure their clients are treated with the dignity and compassion that every person deserves. Please consider the importance of the Council's efforts to promote social justice when deciding what to pay for this CD.

"Vocalist/pianist Justin Hayford is a terrific singer who has a knack for finding good songs that are far from overdone, and sharing them with those who have discerning taste. His fourth album, Here I’ll Stay (LML), has twelve songs, the most familiar among them being “Why Try to Change Me Now,” “The Best Thing for You (Would Be Me),” “Blame It on My Youth,” “Everything Happens to Me” and “Here I’ll Stay.” Hayford’s light baritone and superb phrasing are easy on the ears, and makes each lyric come alive .... Hayford has produced another appealing collection for fans of good songs, well sung."
